Another Day in the Business Machine
March 6th, 2007 by 1mil [^]

Not a day goes by that I am not thankful for the opportunities that have come way. When I landed my present job at a Fortune 500 company in the Bay Area I thought “hey this was going to be my ticket to prosperity and leadership.” Call me impatient, but it has been neither.

As they days progress I see myself transforming into the worker bee that I am usually disdainful of. Oh ironies of ironies, the Gods hate me maybe, but what choice do I have? This billion-dollar monster-machine only works when every cog is clicking and every sprocket is turning. It seems like my managers only notice me when I squeak. Do you ever have that problem? If everything is going fine and dandy no one pays you any mind, but woe on your pitiful soul if make a simple spelling mistake; it’s as if everyone in the world turned their head to make an unaccepting glance in your direction. The whole machine hunkers down, and $30,000 of your department’s budget is ZIP, right out the window.

So… either I put my effort into the job or I don’t have a job.

Suffice it to say I am not happy.

But happiness comes from within, does it not? I don’t know how many times I’ve lectured to people about how running away from your problems doesn’t solve them. And here I am, trying to run away.

I can’t help it.

I can’t help to notice the way my whole body fills with energy when I am talking to my friends about my business ideas. Or the ways my eyes light up and a smile buries it’s way into my face when I talk about how X-business could do Y-project and become more successful. I’ve seen my mental oasis many times now, and I know for a fact, that I won’t ever be content with a “job” unless it’s one which I have created myself.

So what the hell am I doing in Q-business?

Yesterday I asked myself the same question and went out and got my:

SECOND BUSINESS LICENSE. (the first one I had back in 1999)

Yes I did! Oh yes oh yes I did.

I figured that I needed to stop thinking about my ideas and start executing them.

*stretches arms*

*sighs*

The only question now is: What shall I do with it?

You are impatient. I’m the same way. I recognize the signs. You have not been at the job for more than year right? Yup. Impatient.

    3 months..

I have been at a big 4 accounting firm for 6 months or so now. I hate it and share some of the same sentiments that you do. In college I was really into entrepreneurship, but that has been stifled since I have been with the firm. I even have to be careful about the political implications of talking about such ambitions with my coworkers.

I don’t define myself by my job. I am TMac, I am Auditor. Hellz to the No!!

I am always thinking about a “slash” lifestyle that allows me to do a bunch of different things like start a consulting company, invest in real estate, maybe start a franchise, etc. I know I thrive when many different things are going on.

So what I really want to know, what is your second business license in? and waht was the first?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Cheers,
    TMac

    Accounting — ouch!

You have to be totally in love with numbers to do that.

Why did you move away from starting you own biz?

No matter what I do there is a piece of me that is always burning to venture out into the wild and do my own thing.

LMAO@Hellz to the no! (did you get that from one of my comments lol!)

Hmm.. well there is one thing you have to understand about me, I am not into “money” per se, as much as I am into building things. The catch 22 being it takes money to build things. Money for me is the means, and not the end…

I take great pride in creating something and watching it grow, and I’ve done this a number of times, mostly community type things like my fraternity, or my cultural and academic orgs.

With those I’ve always had to peddle ideas to people and get them to buy into it. What other motivation does a person have? You have to create value for them to want to be a part of it. I’ve learned to be a great salesperson and marketer because of this.

So now, all grown up, I’m trying to translate those same ideas and methods that worked for my organizations into a business.

What business licenses did I have before?

Well maybe you mean, what kinds of businesses did I create (because a business license is more like an agreement to pay taxes on your sales)

I’m really big on marketing, and visuals, so I’ve tried to find ways that I can, as I always say “personify my ideas into a business.” By that I mean, taking my natural talents, experience, and knowledge and leverage it in such as a way as to make money from it, so that I can create the things I really want. (Which I won’t say what that is at this point)

So to put it plainly my business is me. I don’t know how else to do it!
