By now you’re probably thinking ok, what is this damn card?
And to that I would reply —
as much as I would love to show you the carefully crafted card and matching envelope that she sent me my scanner died about two months ago after I stepped on it.
So! Bear with me; what the card looks like isn’t really the point of any of this.
Quite the contrary, this is about a mother who has the entrepreneurial markings of a successful business woman.
Friends Make Life Cheap
You see, my mother, aside from being a talented artist, is rather courageous and resourceful. I mean as a single mother you almost have to be. Yeah, growing up, we had our hard times, — very hard times. But my mother knew how to make connections with all sorts of people and get deals from her newfound friends while remaining to them as genuine as ever. (I’ve always envied her ability to do this, I can’t feign interest in someone for very long, my ADD simply won’t permit it lol)

So when she decided she was going to decorate our humble apartment with 8 foot sculpture paintings of her own creation (rather than buying them of course) she promptly used her network to her advantage. Several weeks later we had a totally 90’s abstract painting in the bathroom and a frightening pastel Jesus on an abstract cross hanging over the fireplace.
Of course I should mention that thanks to her network of friends she managed to buy herself a lovely Miata at an ungodly cheap price. And I would not be to quick to punch someone in the face that suggested some other practice. No. She did all this simply by the grace of her great interpersonal skills.

I am really excited for her.
Her resourcefulness is enviable. It sounds like the card business is taking off for entrepreneurs lately with the availability of the home office equipment to create and market it all over.
Also, it seems that a lot of people are opting out of retirement for a healthier alternative (physically and mentally), which is staying active and giving lifelong entrepreneurial dreams a try. How much more fulfilling is that for those of us who have to lay aside our riskier financial dreams for a day job until our kids grow up. It’s so much better than automatically resigning yourself to some quiet corner as you age.
Best of luck to her, and you’re a great son to help out. You just might be helping to prepare your OWN golden nest egg, my friend.

I’m really hoping she sticks to it. She’s a got a lot to learn though still about the web if she really wants a web based business. Though I think she could do fine without a website.
As far as having to raise a family, I’ve resigned myself to the idea that I might not be having kids until my early thirties, just because I want to be well off before I have to dedicate the rest of my life to my childrens.
++Plus I want to be able to have a stable household.
Then again not very many people have “planned” kids, so I’m hoping I can be one of them!
Well Melanie! You know I always appreciate your well thought out comments. So let me just say that if you ever need someone to bounce business ideas that might work for you let me know!

The Hallmark of a Business Women is about how his mom pesters him (and succeeds???) into letting her use his business name and a website. I am sure we all want to know how this story ends … no … progresses. Keep us posted Juan. […]

[…] Rich Dad motivated me to challenge ideas I had taken for fact, and in time as my perspective matured I took action into my own hands by fighting my financial battles. Everything from fixing my credit score to helping my mom start her own side business were in direct result of the changes inspired by the book I read. […]

[…] Halfway There A month later, I still did not have my money and my mom was in town visiting. I told her what happened and she was livid too. Being the shrewd type that she is, she wanted to give the guy a piece of her mind. We went to his house and she let him have it… bad. Geez, even I felt bad, the unrelenting wrath of my mother is swift and painful. She told him that at least if he did not have all of the money he should give me some of it, and she made him write him a promissory note with the details of his debt to me. The next week I had $1200 cash! Woo hoo! Halfway there – […]
