Thinking Outside the Bottle
April 27th, 2007 by 1mil [^]

Upon pressing your thirst lusting lips against the rim of a bulging bottle of water I bet you don’t stop to think that the water that is caressing your insides is three times more expensive than the liquid gold that fills your gas tank. If that’s not enough to get you to think twice about bottled water then take a look at this:

According to Wikipedia, the world consumers roughly 150 billion liters of bottled water every year, 25.8 billion of which comes from the United States. The packaging of 150 billion liters of water needs equally 150 billion plastic bottles!

Though the materials used are generally recyclable, many of these bottles, particularly those used in developing countries without recycling infrastructure, are discarded rather than recycled, with this trash having a negative effect on the environment.

What a waste of resources! Imagine how much energy we could save just by using refillable containers (and filters)! Anyway I just wanted to share my own thoughts on some of the discussion buzzing around the blogosphere today.

The ever wondeful Melanie from Galvanized sticks her toes into the personal finance pool with her discussion on Bottled Water being a consumer fad in response to CNN Money’s Article Activists Attack sellers of Bottled Water. Then again guys like Neville don’t care about anything else other than selling bottled water to make money.

Personally, I try to get as much mileage out of water bottles as I can. I’ll reuse them many times and rinse them out. It’s cheaper than buying an actual container sometimes! Anyway, I hope you’re drinking your eight glasses of water a day!

Love thy Earth!

Yay! Someone else reuses their water bottles!!! I love reusing my smaller water bottles until they can’t take it anymore, and then recycling them. It’s so weird (ans wasteful) to watch people go through one bottle after another, and just chuck them. It’s not like they HAVE to be filled by the manufacturer to be good!
