How I Lost Weight and Gained Control 3

If you’ve read Part II, you’ve already seen a list of stuff I regularly buy at Costco. And if you haven’t you’re in luck, because I just went shopping today! I should warn you though, some of things I buy on here are part of my training program (denoted by *) which I usually have for breakfast or before/after a workout.

  • Water* (40 bottles) $4.99
    Lasts: 1 month, PPW: $1.25
  • Tyson Teraiyaki Chicken Grills (20 pieces) $13.59
    Lasts : 2 weeks , PPW: $6.79
  • Broccoli (3 lbs) $1.89
    Lasts : 2 weeks, PPW: $0.95
  • 3 Berries Frozen Berries* (4 lbs) $ 9.89
    Lasts : 1.5 months, PPW: $1.64
  • 100% Wheat Bread* (2 loaves) $4.79
    Lasts: 2.5 weeks, PPW: $2.29
  • Apples* (18 count) $7.99
    Lasts: 2 weeks, PPW: $3.99
  • 27g Protein Bars* (24 count) $19.99
    Lasts: 1 month, PPW: $5.00
  • Omega 3 Eggs* (18 count) $2.56
    Lasts: 3 weeks, PPW: $1.33

Price Per Week: $23.54!

Compare this to eating out everyday, or eating out some days AND buying groceries. This is all that I need to pay per week to have all 3 of my meal needs (by calorie, protein, and carb consumption) met.

You can see on average how long these items last me, but in reality after doing this system for so long there will be days where I don’t eat my full meals for the day and I’ll have stuff left over. I get full easier now, and I drink a lot more water.

Also I should mention: I didn’t need any oatmeal or yogart this week because I still have plenty. But the average costs for those things, is another $5 each for a month supply. Sometimes I’ll buy other whole food things, like different types of fruits or vegetables, but the price is still relatively the same.

Oh yeah, and..

Since I’ve stopped eating out as frequently I’ve saved hundreds of dollars that went straight into my money market account where I’m building a down payment for my first real estate property =) I’ve also removed a lot of the fat and calories from my diet by sticking to whole foods — with the exception of my precooked chicken breasts!

–In order for me to be able to eat like this I had to change how I thought about food, as you saw in Part I. Otherwise I would not have been able to acclimate myself to eating the same thing everyday at the same time. To augment my “food system” I had to make getting food and eating food as convenient as possible, and the only way to do that was by finding things that I could prepare and eat in a matter of minutes. I changed my schedule to give me more free time outside of work, and I am healthier and stronger because I am able to maintain this system in symphony with my workout routine. *flexes his muskles*

Don’t forget to keep challenging yourself! Your body will get used to whatever you train it to do, so every now and then throw a wrench in the system, make it harder, do it longer, whatever you like.

You might also check our Spark People, which is a community site for losing weight. They have a lot of awesome tools to keep track of your calories and to create meals, teams, all kinds of things. At the end of the day it was more involved than I wanted it to be. My system is simple. But hey I encourage you to check it out.

[…] Three things that really impress me about Millionster are: 1. The authors’ sheer energy and enthusiasm. They aren’t afraid to self-promote, but they do it respectfully. Also, they come up with new ways of organizing and presenting their articles such as economic experiments and themes 2. Their graphics skills are AMAZING! Oh, and they tricked me with their Creditol ad. I had an off-day and didn’t read too closely. I thought Creditol was a real drug! 3. Their ability to bring seemingly off-topic articles back to personal finance such as Losing Weight and Gaining Control. […]

So how is your weight loss going… I just accidently found your website and the whole costco thing is so true.. I can spend 80-100 at costco get everything i need for 2 weeks and that still saves me spending money for lunch so that is 200 on groceries a month. Also now that Im eating way less that saves money too.. glad to see someone else has the same perspective as me!!!! One last thing I have to hide out from the work people at lunch time but I have found a buddy that brings her lunch too!!!
