Nearly Kicked out of College
When I was going to college the projects I was involved in kept me under constant stress. In addition to my normal engineering studies, I founded and managed a national fraternity, was the editor for the campus newspaper, a president or vice president 4 or 5 different cultural and engineering organizations, and on top of it all I had a part time job! Life was hell.
There was so much I had hoped to accomplish but there was never enough me, or time to do it all. It got so bad that my grades started to slip, I was put on academic probation and I almost got kicked out of school. To sum it up: I wasn’t getting much of anything done. One of my professors took notice of this decline and decided to share with me his recipe for success in life.

7 Factors of Success x 4 Rules Each = 28 Rules.
My professor explained to me that almost every obstacle depends on our individual development of these 7 factors:
- Smarts
- Health
- Wealth
- Happiness
- Friendship
- Productivity
- Efficiency
and that no matter how complex a problem seemed on the outside, his rules would in some way address the problem from the perspective of these factors. From these 7 he shared me with his life goals and how a list of 28 simple rules empowered him to make better decisions in life.

Internalizing the Rules and Adding My Own
His words came to me at a time when I needed them most. I was facing numerous catastrophic life failures, and I needed to regroup and rethink my strategy. To wrap up my story, while I had to let some of my school projects go, I did graduate college (albeit a year later than I wanted), and I accomplished all the things I set out to do while in school. Today I’m setting myself up for more success as I grow and take on new challenges.
Taking my professor’s words to heart I was able to apply some of his wisdom to my own experiences. I didn’t agree with all of his rules so I took the ones that made sense to me and even created some of my own rules. So far I only have 39 rules, so I’ll have to come up with the last 11 with some help from Millionster readers!

How about age as a factor in obstacles to success? At my age, let’s say I go back to school and get an accounting degree. But how many employers are hiring baby boomers for entry-level accounting jobs these days?

Hey Minimum Wage - that’s a very good point you bring up. To address your issue you directly let me just say that I believe it really depends on what you’re trying to accomplish — for me having a job is a dead end because it keeps me married to a paycheck — a job isn’t really what you want is it? A job gets you money, at the cost of your time. So either you want money or you want time. There’s more than one way to go about getting money and time without a job =) ways that are legal! But again that depends entirely on what YOU want. In regards to age, I don’t really think that’s the issue per se. You have to keep in mind that businesses are looking to maintain a positive atmosphere by finding people who will contribute to it. Age may have something to do with it, but most likely not. It’s my belief that your attitude is really what’s going to make a difference whether your a baby boomer, gen x, or gen y. Your goal should be to find an environment where you can thrive and where your personality and attitude match the work atmosphere. If some place really doesn’t hire you because of your age, you’re probably better off without them anyway! If all else fails, start a business, invest , or find other ways to generate income on your own terms! Being as I’ve got plenty to say about your question, I’ll definitely be writing an article about it. Thanks for the feedback!
