It seems like all the business ideas are taken these days. No matter who you are or what you might like to do, by and large your great idea has already been thought up by someone else. (Then again if you’re like me you have a million great ideas and they’re constantly being executed by someone else, DOH!) So, how does an average Joe or Jane go about deciding what business to create or what market to penetrate? And how does one leverage their contacts to make this dream a reality? My mom knows.
My Mom Loves Spam
Today when I got home from work I went and checked my mail like I do everyday expecting something wonderful. So I’m digging through the Clip-N-Save coupons, numerous credit card offers and an assortment of junk mail, only to find an odd step child of a letter sitting in the back of my box. I’m thinking to myself — OK they’re getting mighty clever with this mailbox spam. And I almost threw it out, until, oh wait! this is from my moms. Moms why are you spamming me? I had half a mind to report her ass.
No sir, lol.
I should though, huh?? Teach her a lesson.
Pandora’s Letter (she had a box too apparently)
So yeah, my moms sent me a card, and oh gee golly gosh how sweet — you must think. Don’t be fooled, in her day my mother was a rather successful and ruthless salesperson (and a single one I might add) who drove like she was flying a jet and could stop on a dime. (I’m assuming that’s because sales people do a lot of driving, and I have her old 215,000+ mile car to prove it!)
That same energy found her a rocket scientist of a husband (literally he works for NASA as an aerospace engineer), ironically though he’d rather her just be a stay at home wife, and not actually do anything; I can’t imagine how frustrated she must be — all her creative, social energy all couped up.
Well today she proved to me just how frustrated she was by means of her cuddly card:

You Inspire me…
Yes, oozing with sweetness — how humbling is it to have your super hero of a mother tell you that you inspire her? Oh yeah, I was so very humbled… but my mom and I both tend to be very sarcastic, so I know that this was not natural. This Pandora’s box in an envelope was clearly her clever way of convincing me to build a web store for her flowering business idea.
Anyone that knows me knows that the quickest way to get me to do something for them is by buttering me up. The sprocketry of my mind was something she seems quite familiar with.
Mommy dearest. Your wonders never cease to amaze me.

I am really excited for her.
Her resourcefulness is enviable. It sounds like the card business is taking off for entrepreneurs lately with the availability of the home office equipment to create and market it all over.
Also, it seems that a lot of people are opting out of retirement for a healthier alternative (physically and mentally), which is staying active and giving lifelong entrepreneurial dreams a try. How much more fulfilling is that for those of us who have to lay aside our riskier financial dreams for a day job until our kids grow up. It’s so much better than automatically resigning yourself to some quiet corner as you age.
Best of luck to her, and you’re a great son to help out. You just might be helping to prepare your OWN golden nest egg, my friend.
I’m really hoping she sticks to it. She’s a got a lot to learn though still about the web if she really wants a web based business. Though I think she could do fine without a website.
As far as having to raise a family, I’ve resigned myself to the idea that I might not be having kids until my early thirties, just because I want to be well off before I have to dedicate the rest of my life to my childrens.
++Plus I want to be able to have a stable household.
Then again not very many people have “planned” kids, so I’m hoping I can be one of them!
