Some of you might be aware that I am developing my own business with friends and family members here in Silicon Valley. I spend a lot of time researching how other people start businesses and how they’ve become successful, but there’s one story in particular that I found rather inspiring this morning and just thought I’d share it with you:
This story is about Noor Agha, the best kite-maker in all of Afghanistan. On the surface you might not think that means anything, but actually, kite-flying, is as the story says “the closest thing the war-torn country has to a national sport.”
What is particularly interesting about this story is how dedicated and passionate he is about his craft. His attitude in my perspective is a perfect example of the kind of energy one needs to make it big. And his work speaks for itself: “Down in the Shoar Bazaar, the premier kite market in Kabul, Agha’s kites are much in demand. They sell with at least a 60 percent mark up, and many customers will buy no others.”
Furthermore, Hollywood sought him out to train the actors on the art of kite-flying for a movie called The Kite-Runner which is based off the best selling book; still Mr.Agha, despite his new found fortune, remains as humble and committed as ever.
It’s an amazing story (though it focuses mostly on his role in helping for the movie). [ Read it for yourself on Reuters!]
And of course if you have any feedback or reactions to this, please add to the discussion in the comments below.
Always
Juan.
I read The Kite Runner a while back, and it is such a touching story. The relationship between the two boys is so complex, and their lives so entangled. It was one of the best books that I have ever read about redemption and loyalty. So glad you brought it up, Juan!
And the descriptions of the kite flying/running contests were the best part of the book. How cool the guy really exists. Yes, a lot of pride in one’s craft is the key.
I’ve heard a lot of great things about the book, and your description of it makes me want to check it out!!
I’m looking forward to the movie, it’s supposed to be coming out this summer I think.
